Le Comité international des droits des prostituées est né le 15 février 1985, lors du 1er congrès mondial des prostituées à Amsterdam. Organisé par les militantes américaines Margo St. James et Gail Pheterson, il adopte la même année la Charte mondiale des droits des prostituées (World Charter For Prostitutes' Rights), qui différencie la prostitution forcée et volontaire et appelle à la décriminalisation de cette dernière.
